Paul Doherty: The Devil's Domain

The Devil's Domain

Description

In the summer of 1380 a French captain is murdered in Hawkmere Manor - a lonely, gloomy dwelling place, otherwise known as the 'Devil's Domain', which is used by Regent John of Gaunt to house French prisoners captured during the bloody battles waged between the French and the English on the Narrow Seas. Sir John Cranston and Brother Athelstan are summoned to investigate the mysterious death but their path is riddled with obstacles. How could the murderer have entered the Frenchman's chamber when the room was locked from within? Their aide, Sir Maurice Maltravers, is more of a hindrance than a help, as he faces the misery of heartbreak. Lady Angelica, the woman he intended to marry, has been whisked away to a convent by her tyrannical and disapproving father. It soon becomes apparent that only when the lovers are reunited will any progress be made in the murder investigation...

Michael Taussig: What Color is the Sacred?

What Color is the Sacred?

Description

Over the past thirty years, visionary anthropologist Michael Taussig has crafted a highly distinctive body of work. Playful, enthralling, and whip-smart, his writing makes ingenious connections between ideas, thinkers, and things. An extended meditation on the mysteries of color and the fascination they provoke, "What Color Is the Sacred?" is the next step on Taussig's remarkable intellectual path. Following his interest in magic and surrealism, his earlier work on mimesis, and his recent discussion of heat, gold, and cocaine in "My Cocaine Museum", this book uses color to explore further dimensions of what Taussig calls 'the bodily unconscious' in an age of global warming. Drawing on classic ethnography as well as the work of Benjamin, Burroughs, and Proust, he takes up the notion that color invites the viewer into images and into the world. Yet, as Taussig makes clear, color has a history - a manifestly colonial history rooted in the West's discomfort with color, especially bright color, and its associations with the so-called primitive. He begins by noting Goethe's belief that Europeans are physically averse to vivid color while the uncivilized revel in it, which prompts Taussig to reconsider colonialism as a tension between chromophobes and chromophiliacs. And he ends with the strange story of coal, which, he argues, displaced colonial color by giving birth to synthetic colors, organic chemistry, and IG Farben, the giant chemical corporation behind the Third Reich. Nietzsche once wrote, 'So far, all that has given colour to existence still lacks a history'. With "What Color Is the Sacred?", Taussig has taken up that challenge with all the radiant intelligence and inspiration we've come to expect from him.

Why I am Not a Christian, and Other Essays on Religion and Related Subjects pdf

Bertrand Russell: Why I am Not a Christian, and Other Essays on Religion and Related Subjects

Why I am Not a Christian, and Other Essays on Religion and Related Subjects

Description

Devastating in its use of cold logic, (The Independent), the classic essay collection that expresses the freethinker s views to religion and challenges set notions in today s society from one of the most influential intellectual figures of the twentieth century. Dedicated as few men have been to the life of reason, Bertrand Russell has always been concerned with the basic questions to which religion also addresses itself questions about man s place in the universe and the nature of the good life, questions that involve life after death, morality, freedom, education, and sexual ethics. He brings to his treatment of these questions the same courage, scrupulous logic, and lofty wisdom for which his other work as philosopher, writer, and teacher has been famous. These qualities make the essays included in this book perhaps the most graceful and moving presentation of the freethinker's position since the days of Hume and Voltaire. I am as firmly convinced that religions do harm as I am that they are untrue, Russell declares in his Preface, and his reasoned opposition to any system or dogma which he feels may shackle man s mind runs through all the essays in this book, whether they were written as early as 1899 or as late as 1954. The book has been edited, with Lord Russell s full approval and cooperation, by Professor Paul Edwards of the Philosophy Department of New York University. In an Appendix, Professor Edwards contributes a full account of the highly controversial Bertrand Russell Case of 1940, in which Russell was judicially declared unfit to teach philosophy at the College of the City of New York. Whether the reader shares or rejects Bertrand Russell s views, he will find this book an invigorating challenge to set notions, a masterly statement of a philosophical position, and a pure joy to read."

Available for the first time from Viking, "Angelina and the Princess" and "Angelina on Stage" are two beloved Angelina Ballerina stories. Eventually, though, she decides to work hard for her friends in the performance. Angelina s decision leads to an unexpected turn of events--and a happy ending for everyone." In 1758, at the height of the French and Indian War, British Brigadier General John Forbes led his army on a methodical advance against Fort Duquesene, French headquarters in the Ohio valley. As his army closed in upon the fort, he sent Major Grant of the 77th Highlanders and 850 men on a reconnaissance in force Eric Carle's Opposites download ebook pdf against the fort. The French, alerted to this move, launched their own counter-raid. 500 French and Canadians, backed by 500 Indian allies, ambushed the highlanders and sent them fleeing back to the main army. With the success of that operation, the French planed their own raid against the English encampment at Fort Ligonier under less than fifty miles away. With only 600 men, against an enemy strength of 4,000, he ordered a daring night attack on the heart of the enemy encampment. Buying the Field: Catholic Religious Life in Mission to the World

Description

In this third and final volume of the Religious Life in a New Millennium series, Sandra Schneiders continues her rethinking of the traditional religious vows in the context of postmodernism. She reaches back into the gospels for the meaning of "world" in order to discern the meaning of renunciation of the "world" by religious, and how that tradition needs to be rethought for our times while keeping in mind the prophetic character of religious life that enables witness and ministry. The vow of poverty is examined, both in its economic and spiritual sense (that is, religious life as an alternate economy and the poverty of spirit needed in the quest for God). Finally and this is the part that made this so difficult to write, Sandra examines the vow of obedience, taking into account the role that blind obedience played in the Holocaust and other wrongs committed by misuse of power and authority. She concludes by synthesizing all three volumes.

With only their relentless hunt for a violent, intelligent killer to unite them, Jason and Mahiya embark on a quest that leads to a centuries-old nightmare and to the dark storm of an unexpected passion that threatens to drench them both in blood." Every Falling Star: The True Story of How I Survived and Escaped North Korea

Description

Every Falling Star, the first book to portray contemporary North Korea to a young audience, is the intense memoir of a North Korean boy named Sungju who was forced at age twelve to live on the streets and fend for himself. To survive, Sungju creates a gang and lives by thieving, fighting, begging, and stealing rides on cargo trains. Sungju richly recreates his scabrous story, depicting what it was like for a boy alone to create a new family with his gang, "his brothers," to daily be hungry and to fear arrest, imprisonment, and even execution. This riveting memoir allows young readers to learn about other cultures where freedoms they take for granted do not exist.

With only their relentless hunt for a violent, intelligent killer to unite them, Jason and Mahiya embark on a quest that leads to a centuries-old nightmare and to the dark storm of an unexpected passion that threatens to drench them both in blood." It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. *Classic G.I. How Many Days to America?: A Thanksgiving Story

Description

After the police come, a family is forced to flee their Caribbean island and set sail for America in a small fishing boat. "A moving fictional presentation of the perilous voyage of a group of Caribbean refugees to this country." -- Kirkus Reviews, pointer

'Wake up, genius.' So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is How Many Days to America?: A Thanksgiving Story ebook pdf John Rothstein, a Salinger-like icon who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel. Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when he's released from prison after thirty-five years. Not since Misery has King played with the notion of a reader whose obsession with a writer gets dangerous. Finders Keepers is spectacular, heart-pounding suspense, but it is also King writing about how literature shapes a life - for good, for bad, forever.
